Over the past few days I have noticed some major changes in the rankings of several of my websites. Typically, a google update may move my rankings around slightly however these recent changes were drastic.
One of my sites which has been ranked #5 for it’s best keyword for over 6 months, suddenly dropped to the 10th page. Conversely, one of my sites which didn’t rank in the top 10 pages for it’s best keyword suddenly jumped to the top of the second page.
This is just an example of what some of my sites have done over the past 2 days. Others have remained in their same position but these are mainly sites which are ranked in the top 1-3 positions.
I am hoping this is not in fact the “new” google algorithm in action but just a small hiccup. If it is the algorithm change then my better quality sites are in trouble as the site which was dropped to page 10 is a very informative, well coded, well optimized site with unique content while the one which rose in position is very new and has few quality back links.
Now, if it were only my sites seeing changes then we could just write it off as an error on our part however there are more and more threads appearing at the major webmaster forums including forums.digitalpoint.com and sitepoint.com.
There are a lot of theories floating around as to how the algorithm has changed or if the algorithm has changed. I believe it has but only google knows.
I am trying to compile as much information as possible from those who have been effected either positively or negatively. If you have seen some changes in ranking please comment.

I had the $200 code and procrastinated. I mean there are always promo codes floating around blogs and forums right? Wrong. I couldn’t find a promo code that worked after an hour of searching. At least not a $200 promo code. Codes which were not supposed to expire until sometime in January were expired? Odd.
Anyway, I found a $100 Microsoft adcenter promotional code that still works.
Promo code BNR-100-1006
Hope you can put it to good use!

To me, Yahoo is like the little brother who always wanted to be as popular as Google, but never could. The past few years have shown many changes in the Yahoo portal brand and overall structure take place all to no avail. With Yahoo stock off 30% this year, changes were not only needed, they were absolutely vital.
In come the changes…
From the LA Times.
SAN FRANCISCO — A broad restructuring at Yahoo Inc. on Tuesday claimed
the company’s top operational executive as well as Lloyd Braun, the
former ABC television chief who ran the Santa Monica-based Yahoo Media
Group.
Chief Executive Terry Semel shuffled his management team, capping a
challenging year in which the Internet giant has seen its stock price
tumble 30%. Yahoo has struggled to keep pace with Google Inc., delaying
a new search-engine advertising system that investors had been betting
would help the company close the profitability gap with its rival.
I really hate to be a downer on Yahoo, because I used to really enjoy using the portal back when they were cool, but I just don’t see a way up for Yahoo.
Am I wrong?

Text Link Ads recently launched the Blog Juice Calculator and I must admit… I kinda dig it.
The free blog tool uses an algo that pulls data from Technorati, Alexa, Bloglines, and indexed backlinks to decide what the juice level is. I surfed through some of the categories and I find the results to be highly relevant.

I think Shoemoney hit the nail on the head with this post. Currently there is an infinite tail of blog posts about how “stupid” Google would be to buy YouTube and how “worthless” YouTube really is.
Is that so?
Let’s be honest here. A lot of us feel Google has some serious issues with its search engine. A lot of us dislike the way Google runs things from time to time. But the bottom line is that Google is smart. They know how to make money and they know how to find space for Adsense.
And to those of you who think the legal headache that comes with YouTube is too much for Google, Shoemoney makes a nice point to end the debate.
Legal issues are not issues - Cmon your talking about the company that scans library books and puts them online… AND GETS AWAY WITH IT

This post might be a bit off topic, but I just gotta have an answer of some kind or I’m gonna go nuts. eRodTech.com is only three days old now. I couldn’t be happier with the success so far. The first day I saw a whopping 15 visits. The second day 80 of you crossed the pages, and today we had 209 unique visits. Let’s hope this trend continues.
Moving on…
I’m watching the search engines, specifically Google, to see when the homepage will be indexed. This morning I discovered an intriguing result on an “in index” query in Google. The result showed that Google had indexed one page and one page alone. Much to my surprise… it wasn’t the index page.

What gives? At first glance, I thought it might have been the only page about Google, but after a closer look it was discovered that one other post about a Google tool had been previously posted.
Why did Google only index the page about its ping tool? Anyone want to take a guess?
