New google algorithm - Fact or fiction?

google.jpg

Over the past few days I have noticed some major changes in the rankings of several of my websites. Typically, a google update may move my rankings around slightly however these recent changes were drastic.

One of my sites which has been ranked #5 for it’s best keyword for over 6 months, suddenly dropped to the 10th page. Conversely, one of my sites which didn’t rank in the top 10 pages for it’s best keyword suddenly jumped to the top of the second page.

This is just an example of what some of my sites have done over the past 2 days. Others have remained in their same position but these are mainly sites which are ranked in the top 1-3 positions.

I am hoping this is not in fact the “new” google algorithm in action but just a small hiccup. If it is the algorithm change then my better quality sites are in trouble as the site which was dropped to page 10 is a very informative, well coded, well optimized site with unique content while the one which rose in position is very new and has few quality back links.

Now, if it were only my sites seeing changes then we could just write it off as an error on our part however there are more and more threads appearing at the major webmaster forums including forums.digitalpoint.com and sitepoint.com.

There are a lot of theories floating around as to how the algorithm has changed or if the algorithm has changed. I believe it has but only google knows.

I am trying to compile as much information as possible from those who have been effected either positively or negatively. If you have seen some changes in ranking please comment.

Free $100 Microsoft adcenter promotional code! FINALLY!

I had the $200 code and procrastinated. I mean there are always promo codes floating around blogs and forums right? Wrong. I couldn’t find a promo code that worked after an hour of searching. At least not a $200 promo code. Codes which were not supposed to expire until sometime in January were expired? Odd.

Anyway, I found a $100 Microsoft adcenter promotional code that still works.

Promo code BNR-100-1006

Hope you can put it to good use!

Homestead.com CEO says screw customers!

I’m not sure how proud I am to admit this, but I do have a Homestead account. As a matter of fact, I host about 20 websites at Homestead.com. I opened the account about 5 years ago and the only reason I chose Homestead is because I had absolutely no clue what I was doing and Homestead seemed to be the best option at the time.

I couldn’t have been more wrong…

Since then, I’ve had problems so often that most of the time I just ignore them as I don’t really use those sites anymore. There was a time, however, when I would actually try to contact Homestead support for help. Contrary to what the Homestead big shot, Justin Kitch, says about his customer service, it has got to be some of the worst support I have EVER dealt with. And I have sites hosted on at least ten different hosting companies. Hands down, Homestead is the worst.

Washington Post Launches Blogroll

To be honest… I completely forgot that I submitted my blogs to the Washington Post Blogroll program a few months back. It wasn’t until today when the newsletter dropped in that I realized the system was still on its way.

From the Washington Post Blogroll Blog:

“The Blogroll is a unique service for bloggers created by the
advertising team at Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive (WPNI). Blogs
partnered with WPNI are given a rotating spot on the washingtonpost.com
homepage, and are given the opportunity to accept ads from WPNI
advertisers. Partner blogs will also be a fixture in our regularly
updated Blogroll Directory, which lists all members based on their
category.”

I hope I get accepted!

YouTube slowing going the way of the spam bucket

YouTube

I first wrote about this back when the Lovelygirl13 event unfolded on YouTube. If you didn’t follow the story, and hopefully most of you didn’t, it was a marketing ploy put on by a couple guys who probably have dollar signs in their contact lenses. The cast was a girl who always looked… well… lonely. She led her fan base through a journey of her life via YouTube only to watch them fall flat on their faces when it was discovered that it was all a fake. Read the rest of this entry »

Hot tips and tricks for bloggers

I’ve started working on my upcoming “Guide to Making Money Blogging” and have a few odds and ends that I can go ahead and release for your viewing. These documents are in their very young stages and we’ll be changing them often over the next few weeks. Also, we’re on the hunt for folks to give us a hand in putting each section together. If you give us a hand with one of the sections we’ll gladly give you credit and link love in return.

The first section that’s available for reading is Tips & tricks that help you find the latest news. This section explores most of todays fastest news and press release sources that can help you stay one step ahead in the game of information dominance.

I’ve also put section one, two and three of the main guide online. These sections are incomplete but well on their way to a good start.

Again, if you see a place where you could contribute please let me know.

Proof that images help target your Adsense ads

As you can see I try to work in a lot of images when posting. It’s a habit I’ve wanted to obtain so this blog is a good place to practice. eRodTech.com is fairly new, but it’s already given me the chance to learn a few things about targeting the Adsense ads that display on the site.

Earlier today I caught the following ad on this post.

firefox-for-dummies

The image was tagged “firefox2″ and sat directly above the ad. If this isn’t targeted, I don’t know what is.

Now to get that sidebar ad to align with the content of the site…

Google and YouTube sitting in the tree…

I just woke up after a long night of blogging of working on my blogs and very little sleep, and the first RSS feed to drop in is the big Google meets YouTube story. It’s not only making its way across the blogosphere, it’s also on Fox News and a plethora of other sources. This is BIG news.

YouTube, a video hosting site with millions of visitors, has been smelling trouble on the horizon for some time now. The struggling company is not far from an arsenal of copyright lawsuits and it knows it needs to move and fast. I think this particular direction is the right way to go.

From the looks of things, Google will buy YouTube for $1.6 billion. What this means is that you can plan on seeing Google video take the lead in vlogging and free online video hosting. With Google in the lead we’ll no doubt see many innovations moving forward.

I think this is good for YouTube and good for Google. Everyone comes out in a little bit of a better position.

Good stuff!

Get PAID to post in forums

No I’m not talking about those silly firms that pay you something like .12 cents per post. This is more of a contest style pay that is 100% up for grabs at all times. Plus, the forums are a pretty good place to learn about making money online.

The contest is run more like a lottery in that whoever lands on a specific number while posting, (and I’m talking about the overall forum post count by the way) takes the win. Check out the set up.

Round 1
128,000th Post = $25.00
128,500th Post = $35.00 (round 1 just ended so we’re now in round two)

Round 2
139,996th Post = $75.00
139,997th Post = $100.00
139,998th Post = $110.00
139,999th Post = $120.00
140,000th Post = $150.00

Round 3
149,996th Post = $160.00
149,997th Post = $170.00
149,998th Post = $180.00
149,999th Post = $190.00
150,000th Post = $300.00

Bonus prize!
If one person gets the 128,500th post, 140,000th post and 150,000th post, that person will win a $2,000.00 bonus!

We’re talking $2,500.00 bucks plus here! Do they pay? Well, I work for them and can say that they have a steller reputation. Besides the forum is owned by preCharge, a fraud protection firm, so you can bet these guys are constantly on their feet.

My user name over there is Eric. We’ve got a new template coming and a lot of other cool goodies on the way. The forum is geared toward everything related to SEO, graphics, business, marketing, tips & tricks, programming, etc… it’s all there. Check it out.
