Shoemoney on the Google YouTube chatter

I think Shoemoney hit the nail on the head with this post. Currently there is an infinite tail of blog posts about how “stupid” Google would be to buy YouTube and how “worthless” YouTube really is.

Is that so?

Let’s be honest here. A lot of us feel Google has some serious issues with its search engine. A lot of us dislike the way Google runs things from time to time. But the bottom line is that Google is smart. They know how to make money and they know how to find space for Adsense.

And to those of you who think the legal headache that comes with YouTube is too much for Google, Shoemoney makes a nice point to end the debate.

Legal issues are not issues – Cmon your talking about the company that scans library books and puts them online… AND GETS AWAY WITH IT

Google only indexed a page about Google

This post might be a bit off topic, but I just gotta have an answer of some kind or I’m gonna go nuts. eRodTech.com is only three days old now. I couldn’t be happier with the success so far. The first day I saw a whopping 15 visits. The second day 80 of you crossed the pages, and today we had 209 unique visits. Let’s hope this trend continues. :-)

Moving on…

I’m watching the search engines, specifically Google, to see when the homepage will be indexed. This morning I discovered an intriguing result on an “in index” query in Google. The result showed that Google had indexed one page and one page alone. Much to my surprise… it wasn’t the index page.

Google results

What gives? At first glance, I thought it might have been the only page about Google, but after a closer look it was discovered that one other post about a Google tool had been previously posted.

Why did Google only index the page about its ping tool? Anyone want to take a guess?

Proof that images help target your Adsense ads

As you can see I try to work in a lot of images when posting. It’s a habit I’ve wanted to obtain so this blog is a good place to practice. eRodTech.com is fairly new, but it’s already given me the chance to learn a few things about targeting the Adsense ads that display on the site.

Earlier today I caught the following ad on this post.

firefox-for-dummies

The image was tagged “firefox2″ and sat directly above the ad. If this isn’t targeted, I don’t know what is.

Now to get that sidebar ad to align with the content of the site…

Firefox opens the gate for Firefox 2 Release Candidate 2 (RC 2)

This week has been a gold mine for developers. First, Google dropped Code Search into the world wide web for unlimited use, and now Firefox opens the goodie gate to reveal Firefox 2 Release Candidate 2 (RC 2).

Google and YouTube sitting in the tree…

I just woke up after a long night of blogging of working on my blogs and very little sleep, and the first RSS feed to drop in is the big Google meets YouTube story. It’s not only making its way across the blogosphere, it’s also on Fox News and a plethora of other sources. This is BIG news.

YouTube, a video hosting site with millions of visitors, has been smelling trouble on the horizon for some time now. The struggling company is not far from an arsenal of copyright lawsuits and it knows it needs to move and fast. I think this particular direction is the right way to go.

From the looks of things, Google will buy YouTube for $1.6 billion. What this means is that you can plan on seeing Google video take the lead in vlogging and free online video hosting. With Google in the lead we’ll no doubt see many innovations moving forward.

I think this is good for YouTube and good for Google. Everyone comes out in a little bit of a better position.

Good stuff!

Hacking Google China to remove censorship feature

It didn’t take the world wide web long to figure out a way to bypass the filter Google has allowed the China version of its search engine to use. The controversial filter screens search results and removes those results that China deems to be censored information.

Chinese searchers can now see uncensored results for their Google search by replacing “&meta=” with “&meta=cr%3DcountryBR” in the URL. Once the string is replaced, the censorship will not affect the results.

Is this something that Google intentionally left open for users to find or will they quickly act to glose the gap?

Google ping service announced

I love seeing new ping services come into play, and this one comes from the big daddy of the search engine industry, Google. As confirmed on the official Google Blog, Google is now offering a ping service for bloggers. From the sounds of things the results may even be worked into the main indexes.

Google sure is coming out with a lot of nifty tools as of late. My questions still remains… Google, when are you going to fix the search engine?

Google Groups Now Comes in Sexy

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never been into the whole group site scene. I might have tried joining a few groups here and there, but I never really stuck around and quickly lost interest. Heck, I don’t even, nor have I ever, owned a myspace account.

With that being said, the new beta version of Google Groups just might have me stepping it up a notch.

From the official Google Blog:

It may have been awhile since you thought of Groups as cool or sexy — if you ever did — but I couldn’t have been more excited to work on the team responsible for making the current Google Groups better.

If you could win an award for looks alone, I would be saying give Google the trophy. The interface is slick and clean. I find it extremely easy to navigate.

The new version comes packed with goodies like custom logo uploading, file uploads, custom text and colors, some gmail tools and more!

I’ve started my own group and will report back after I get a chance to swim around and see what it all feels like.

Stroll on over to Google Labs

I’d seen posts about Google Labs, but until now I’d never actually paid the site a visit.

Google kicks off its nifty little tech lab page with this.

Google labs showcases a few of our favorite ideas that aren’t quite ready for prime time. Your feedback can help us improve them. Please play with these prototypes and send your comments directly to the Googlers who developed them.

This is no understatement. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the lab here at Erod. Keep your peepers peeled. :-)
