Valto,
I think you mean adsense and not adwords.
It is true in many cases that you will earn more selling your advertising space to the end user however finding those end users and then convincing them that your stats are not inflated etc. is not all that easy.
If you go through a third party like adengage you are giving a lot of the profit to their service.

I use phpadsnew to manage my advertising across many sites. This way I can give the advertiser the advertiser ads on several sites while only adding the ad once to the phpadsnew advertising platform. I can't remember how much phpadsnew cost however I am sure it was relatively inexpensive. Also you can geo target so if someone wants just US or UK traffic etc. you can sell it to them at a premium.

With some work though you can find people to advertise directly but believe me when I tell you if you dont get a TON of traffic the amount advertisers are willing to pay is very low.

It's a well known fact that direct advertising sales generate more ad income than adwords tradedoubler. So it's just amazing to me how so many sites dont have any kind of ad rate card, ad pricing or even a advertising link for potential advertisers to contact.

Also if we think about print publications, they may have rate cards but only PDF - even still today! when web is going from 2.0 to 3.0, print advertising sales are still back in 80's

Still - blogs and small print publications have very good and high quality reader and pin point target groups...

Thanks for the comments everyone. I have been super busy and have not been here in a while and now I am starting to catch up a bit.

Wan, to answer your question I was making WAY more with YPN.
Also I have several adword campaigns running and my CPC does not appear to have fluctuated since June/July however my EPC has increased especially in early September.
When I select my keywords for an adwords campaign I dont go for the most expensive keywords I go for a ton of similar keywords, typos etc.

Hi John,

This month Google announced sweeping changes to Adsense and Adwords with most advertisers getting hard hit by escalating ppc prices. Any idea how you manage to overcome that? Thanks.

Hey John! Great piece!

I imagine that $150+ is based on multiple sites, right?
What sort of advertising income do you think is possible for a blog that gets 40,000 hits a month?

I'm debating on either sticking with AdSense (which currently only nets me $20 per week) and tweaking it to earn higher OR moving to another ad network like YPN OR actually creating an Ad Rate Card and soliciting advertising from manufacturing contacts in the industry that I cover.

I can provide additional info if you need it in order to make a better educated guess.

I wish you continued success!

Edwin,
Apart from adsense our revenue is close to a million dollars per year.

This includes our ecommerce sites.

The revenue from advertising income is about $150-$200/day. Most is generated via YPN right now however we also use some affiliate programs (amazon, commission junction and individuals).
